Perfect summer day with friends… swimming, tootling, ice cream & cuddled up to watch the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. Oh happy day!!  And look what I found to take to our show at Restoration Emporium next weekend… LOVE the colors of this old tin.  Tomorrow we are going to hang it ALL {in an insanely hot warehouse, Lord be with us!!}.

A few people have asked me about TEXAS so I thought I would post a few more of the pics that I took… I always think that I’m going to document more than I do.  This bi-annual trip is such a blur ~ too much to see, too many people to visit with, and never enough time.

This trip was particularly short.  The primary reason for going down to Round Top Antique Week this spring was for the radio gig that I am a part of… the Junk in My Trunk Radio Show has been ON THE AIR for almost four years, I have been doing it for the last two of those years.  Every spring and fall Marburger Farm has us {we call ourselves the ‘Junk Mafia’} come and do a live broadcast from their AMAZING antique show.

I have posted a few of the pics that I took while we were there that morning – Marburger Farm is the best of the best… over 400 vendors, great food, TONS of people, and a huge assortment of antiques from all over the world and every price point you can imagine.

I don’t talk much about the radio show here on CCD.com but it has become a bigger part of my professional life this spring and I’ll probably bring it up more and more so here’s a quick download:  the radio show airs every Monday, Thursday & Saturday at 10am CST…

You can listen to it on the radio here in the Kansas City area, or online at www.JunkMafia.com.  The premise of the show is to talk about JUNK, Day Trips, Road Trips, independent business owners, restaurants, truck stops, and all of the other things that make the road ways of this great country a wonderful place to live and love!!

In less than two weeks this entire tobacco warehouse in Weston MO will be filled with antiques, vintage, primitives, junk, collectibles & MORE for the 30th Annual Weston MO Antique Show.  The event will last two days, April 27 + 28 2012.

The night of the 27th, here at the Cactus Creek Shop, we will be having our annual Tamale Party – delicious tamales, beer & wine… EVERY ONE is invited!!

Also that weekend in Weston MO… Bluegrass Festival, Plant & Flower Sale, Antique Car Show & Grand Opening of the Farmers House Market.  Where the heck else areya’ gonna’ be??

We had a great time, as always, on last week’s trip to Round Top Antique Week.  It was a super fast… 14 hours to get there, 40 hours of Texas fun, then 16 hours to get home.  My primary reason for going was to for a radio gig with Junk Mafia.  I have been doing the radio show for a couple of years now and we are always honored that Marburger Farm asks us to come for a live broadcast.  More on that later…

While there we hung out for an afternoon in the little town of Round Top, Texas and I fell IN LOVE with Lizzie Lou.  I’ve been there before and even found some old pics from a few years ago, but this time I was completely entranced by owner Mary Lou’s merchandising.

It seems like I am always wondering into other people’s shops and thinking I want the Cactus Creek Shop to exactly like this!!  Of course we all have our own style and our own selection of merchandise but I was grateful that Mary Lou let me take a few pictures for inspiration.

Because it was such a short trip I bought next to nothing but I did buy a little Mexican Batea from Lizzie Lou to add to my collection.  There was so much to love… If I could have bought out the whole shop I would have done it in a heart beat!!

I cannot believe that it is that time again… Round Top Antique Week in Texas.  For the last few years I have gone every spring and fall.  Every trip is so much fun, I meet so many people {many who have become life-long friends}, and get so inspired, I think it will be forever before it is time to go again.  Then, before I know it, it’s here.  Time truly does travel faster with age, huh??  So for those of you not familiar with Round Top, the back story is HERE.

Personally I have had a wild ride the last few months… sold our house, moved into the apartment above the shop, and did things I never thought I’d do…   But this ride has landed me here, 15 hours away from leaving on another road trip to my home state of TEXAS.

The other day The Farmer’s Trophy Wife tweeted me {tweet link HERE} about what to do, what to see, because SHE IS TRAVELING ALL THE WAY TO TEXAS FROM CANADA… that’s a girl from my own tribe fo-sho.  Here is what I told here she HAD to do…

Eat at Royers Cafe in Round Top, get lost in the fields at Warrenton, drink Shiner Bock in Zapp Hall…

buy at least one thing you have no business buying. Love the Junk Gypsies & soak it all up!! AND wear comfy boots ;)

Last month, when I went to First Fridays in KC’s West Bottoms for the monthly Vintage & Antique SALE, I decided that it was time for Cactus Creek to jump on board. We were very lucky that our first choice of venues, Restoration Emporium, was happy to make a space for us. So one week from today, March 2/3/4, 2012, we’ll be down in th bottoms showing all of our R*W*V GOODS. Hope you’ll come see us!!!!

On a side note, we are supposed to have everything completely moved in by the end of the day Monday, I won’t even be able to start moving in till Monday morning… I hope that they don’t all hate me when they realize that I fly by the seat of my pants… wait for the britches to catch on fire, then work like hell to pull it off. It’s worked for the last 11 years so fingers crossed we can do it again!!

For two fabulous days, the Dolly Johnson Antique & Art Show packs in 75 top exhibitors from across the nation with antiques & art from Pilgrim Century to Mid-Century Modern.

On March 9-10, 2012, look for antiques and art such as: American, French, English, Jewelry, Folk Art, Industrial, Garden, Western and Mid-Century Modern. With music, Coburn’s Catering, and a cash bar, come for the plunder and stay for the party!

Founded in 1963 by Dolly Johnson, wife of long-time Will Rogers Memorial Center Director Rip Johnson, they are the oldest Antique and Art Show in the American west!! Well-known throughout the nation, the show runs only two days per year, only in Fort Worth.

Have you ever had one of those days that is just great from top to bottom??  Today was one of those days & I am most grateful for it… I spent the morning shopping & eating fried food with a darling friend in Kansas City’s West Bottoms.  Every First Friday weekend there are several old warehouses that are opened up and stocked full of antiques, vintage finds & a few hand made goods.  We shopped till we dropped and barely got through half of it.

I was able to get a couple of new vendors for the Weston MO Antique Show April 27 & 28 {you’re coming for that, right??}.  Including crazy-fantastic Melinda Dennis who has an amazing eye and jewerly you’ll drool over.

I saw lots of people I know & love… it’s a good thing to be amongst people who are a part of your tribe.  They have that same DNA that you have that draws you to the beauty of old things.

As the the afternoon moved on good news kept falling all over me and I am feeling grateful to the good Lord above for continuing to carry me through this crazy chapter of life.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU JESUS.  Hope y’all have a great weekend!!  Monita will be at the shop while I take the boys on a little road trip.  be safe & keep the faith, xofancy

Last Spring 11 was my first year to help organize Weston’s annual Spring Antique Show… inspired by women like Serena from Farm Chicks, Ki from Junk Bonanza, and of course my favorite Texas show, Marburger Farm, we’re a long way away from making Country Living’s Top Ten, but this is the 30th year of the show and it has deep roots.  I am so excited to be working on it again and thinking of new ways to stretch and grow the event.

This is, of course, an invitation to attend.  Our little town of Weston has loads to offer… a Main Street full of shops, eight B&Bs, a historic hotel, phenonomenal restaurants, a pub 5 stories underground, 3 local wineries… plus we’re only 15 minutes from the Kansas City airport.  There is no reason for you not to take a road trip, plane trip, bus or train.  Just get your booty here April 27 & 28 to check out our sweet little town + the ANTIQUE SHOW!!
