BACK TO SCHOOL: Chalk Board Paint

Chalkboard House

Chalk boards are a thing of the past for modern schools.  Replaced by big white boards & projection screens, chalk is generally relegated to sidewalks, and school chalk boards are now vintage finds that are hip to hang on the wall of a dining room, hallway or coffee house.  But there are a mighty large number of uses for chalk board paint ~ I adore this chalkboard horse from Houndstooth Design.  They have a large selection of animals chalked up in their ETSY Store…

Chalk Board Globe

The Chalkboard Globe is a popular way to salvage globes from FLEA MARKETS & make them new again.  The one {above} from Design Sponge has the continents outlined, but I’ve also seen them all black & covered with words of wisdom, travel dreams, or kiddo’s doodles.

Chalk Board Fan

I am a huge fan of RESCUED JUNK by Old Crow Farm ~ a married team of true junkers, based in Iowa, who are always spot on in their industrial vintage taste & BIG ideas.  For example, this vintage fan updated with chalkboard paint.

Chalkboard Cabinets

I’m always drawn to open shelves in the kitchen… the chalkboard paint on these from Apartment Therapy makes them even more interesting.

Re-Loved School House Houses

Refurbished School House in England

Following the Back to School theme this week I wondered how many houses I could scour up that were re-furbished school houses… I can’t imagine the love that is poured into transforming these charming buildings where so many children thrived, into homes and businesses to be enjoyed for generations to come.  I just adore the first school house in the heart of England {above}… it’s so majestic, and that fireplace is indicative of an amazing interior.

Back to School TREASURY

Monday, August 15th, 2011

It’s back to school time, baby… ready or not.  No more sleeping in, swimming on a whim, or spaghetti for breakfast.  Time to send the babies off to school.   Whether it’s to kindergarten or college, the time is here to sing the back to school blues… Be cool, stay in school.

To celebrate our first week back to school I created my first ever ETSY Treasury… a little retail therapy might be just the ticket this week.

 Back to School Blues

Cute School Desk from School of Vintage.  Love LETTERS, especially this little C from Salvage Nation.  A great vintage lunch box from Boutique & Beyond.  And a vintage eye glass case from Neldas Nook.

 Back to School Treasury

You’re never too young for a Thermos from Apartment 528.  And the maps… we love maps, and I especially love Austin Modern which is one of my favorite shops on ETSY.  Globe from Vintage Domestic.

 Back to School Blues

Chalkboard Window from Timeless JourneyKeep Calm and Carry On bag from Packs and Totes makes a perfect library bag or shopping bag.  Alarm clock from Space Jam {I dread the alarm clock, folks}.  LOVE this Prep School Sweater from My Tootling Tootie.

boy crazy

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

We’ve been doing our best to soak up the last few days of summer before school starts this week… swimming, bike riding, movies.  Yesterday at the store a darling couple came in with their spankin’ new baby boy {only 4 weeks old, gah, they’re so sweet!!}… we got to talking about the JOY OF BOYS.  I told them that I have 3 of my own little man cubs & the “girl question” arised ~ did you ever want one?? would you ever have one??

 summer fun

The answer is emphatically no.  You know why??  Because last Friday for our “end of summer fun day” I took my boys bowling, foot long corn dogs for lunch, to Good Will for puzzles, then to a Pawn Shop.  They thought it was the best day ever, I had to agree.

“Back to School” marks a new beginning ~ a fresh start that signifies the beginning of new routines, new friends and new STUFF.
My oldest is starting “pre-K” this year {uh-oh, this mommy just got teary eyed and we’re not even going to kindergarten yet!!}.  Anyway, even Wyatt was excited about the new STUFF and insisted on a brand new messenger bag.
{I know, I’m in trouble…}

Here are some fun ideas for your little buckaroos as you prepare for Back to School this weekend.

These note cards are my absolute favorite find for “Back to School”!!  Who couldn’t pass up the Elementary Lovenote Set available from the Curiosity Shoppe??  Each card is screen-printed by hand and is made with 100% recycled paper.  I know that Valentine’s Day seems eons away but I can tell you now that I’ll be bringing these out again for Heart Day!!  Love ‘em…

Fast forward through the first day of school - my favorite part of any day is SNACKS.  After-school snacks are even better!!  I can so vividly remember watching cartoons and eating Cheese Nips every afternoon when I got home from school.  I look forward to creating after-school memories for my boys… this Retro Cowboy TV Tray and Dukes of Hazzard re-runs should do the trick!!
